The film is directed by Stephen Frears and written by Peter Straughan. It stars Dev Patel as Ramanujan and Jeremy Irons as G. H. Hardy; both actors received Academy Award nominations for their performances in this film. The Man Who Knew Infinity was filmed in India and England. The film premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2014, and was released theatrically in the United Kingdom on 16 May 2015, and in the United States on 31 October 2015. In 1911 Madras (now Chennai), India, Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel), a poor Indian clerk in the British Lord Wrenbury's accounting firm, is so much ahead of his time that he has no place to work or develop his ideas. He asks G. H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons) for permission to come to Cambridge University to pursue mathematical research before returning home to work in his spare time. At first, his ideas seem weird, even comically so to the Cambridge mathematicians. Hardy is determined to bring him into the fold and comes up with a strategy. He puts him on a diet of one meal per day while providing him with a stipend so meager it requires him to seek out free meals at the university's student commons. After a while of this regimen, he is admitted into a state of health that allows him to do mathematical research full-time. Ramanujan's hard work pays off and he produces startling new results in mathematics, including an infinite number of formulas for pi. He writes to Hardy with his results and, when Hardy ignores them, writes to Wrenbury. Wrenbury is involved in the establishment of the Madras Port Trust and, after reading Ramanujan's letter, agrees to provide him with a research assistant position there. A few months later, they move into an apartment at 8 Tavistock Square—one of the most prestigious addresses in London—and into a larger office in Trinity College for his job with the Port Trust. Hardy and Ramanujan begin a relationship and bond over their shared hobbies—accomplishing mathematical work and watching cricket matches. One day, Hardy's friend Arthur Stanley Eddington discovers Ramanujan has done similar work to his own on the orbits of binary stars. Eddington informs Hardy, who edits the most recent edition of the "Encyclopædia Britannica" and likes to have novel ideas or achievements that are still being researched added to the encyclopedia. Hardy sends Ramanujan's paper on the topic with a note saying it will be in the next edition. When he learns of this, Ramanujan is delighted, but is disappointed when Hardy refuses to review his work "in full". Ramanujan soon reveals that he has achieved another major breakthrough in mathematics. cfa1e77820
